Validation micro-grants
Purpose: Test a risky assumption before you commit months of work. Award: $500–$2,000 (non-repayable, no equity). Eligibility: Any enrolled student (solo or team), any major, any stage — even “I have a problem but no solution yet.” Typical uses: User interviews (incentives, travel), landing-page ads, prototype materials (3-D print, PCB fab, sew a sample), survey panels, domain/expert consults. Cycles: Rolling applications, reviewed biweekly by a rotating panel (staff + 2 alumni founders + 1 faculty). Decision within 10 days. Volume: ~80 grants/year, $95K total. Success metric: Did you learn something that changed your direction? (Failure is a valid outcome — 40% of grants result in “pivot or stop,” which is celebrated.)
Student Venture Fund (seed)
Purpose: Scale a venture with validated demand — build v1, hire first employee, launch paid pilot. Award: $10,000–$50,000 (equity-free, milestone-based). Eligibility: At least one founder is a current student or recent alum (<2 years); venture has demand evidence (paying customers, LOIs, waitlist >100, or $5K+ revenue). Terms: No equity, no repayment, no board seat. Milestones are co-defined (e.g., “ship v1 to 10 beta customers by Week 8,” “achieve $2K MRR by Week 16”). Funds released in 3 tranches tied to milestones. Governance: Investment Committee (Director of Innovation, 3 alumni angels, 1 faculty, 1 student rep) votes; Director has veto. Volume: 6–8 investments/year, $250K–$350K deployed. Follow-on: Portfolio ventures raise external rounds at 5x–15x the Fund’s entry valuation; the Fund’s “pro-rata” is a handshake agreement to participate in the next round (not contractual).
Application and review process
Micro-grant (Form A, 15 min): Problem statement, riskiest assumption, experiment design, budget ($500 increments), team bios. Review criteria: Clarity of assumption, experiment validity, budget realism, founder grit. Seed Fund (Form B, 2 hrs): One-pager, traction deck (metrics, cohorts, unit economics), 12-week milestone plan, cap table, IP summary, mentor references. Due diligence: 30-min founder interview, reference calls, metric verification (Stripe/QuickBooks export or customer emails). Timeline: Micro-grant → decision in 10 days. Seed → 3-week process (screen → deep dive → IC vote). Reapplication: Micro-grant alumni get fast-track seed review (skip screen, go straight to deep dive).
Milestones and reporting
Micro-grant: One-page Learning Report due 30 days after award (What did you test? What did you learn? What’s next?). No financial receipts required (honor system, spot-checked 10%). Seed: Weekly 15-min standup with assigned Venture Advisor (staff). Biweekly Milestone Review (written update + 20-min presentation to Advisor + 1 alumni mentor). Missed milestone → automatic pause (no further tranches) + 14-day cure period. Three pauses → Fund may convert to repayable loan (rare, 2 cases in 8 years). Transparency: All milestone data (anonymized) published in the Annual Innovation Report (public, feeds the site index for Poly chatbot).
