About the job
Admissions recruits tour ambassadors twice a year, and this posting is for the spring cohort of eight. Every visit starts at the Welcome Center, the 1911 rail depot, and most families meet a tour ambassador before they meet anyone with a title. Spring is the busiest season, with admitted students deciding by May 1.
We do not want a script reader. Families trust a guide who names a trade-off and can say what they would change about Porter. Last spring’s cohort included a welding major, two nursing students, and a commuter from Lake City, and that range is the point.
What you’ll do
- Lead 75-minute walking tours of the academic core, a residence hall, and Founders Union, two to three times a week, walking backward on ice when necessary.
- Work Ironclad Preview Days and admitted-student Saturdays: check-in, panels, and lunch tables.
- Call admitted students in March and April from a list and an outline.
- Write a two-line visit note after each tour so counselors know what a family asked about.
What we’re looking for
- Students who have completed at least one semester at Porter by January.
- Public-speaking comfort, or a willingness to get there. The training is built for people who are not naturally loud.
- Honest answers about cost, safety, and winter, with a referral when you do not know.
- At least one Saturday a month free during spring semester.
More about the role is on becoming a campus tour guide.
Schedule and pay
Tours leave the Welcome Center at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on weekdays, plus selected Saturdays at 10 a.m. Ambassadors pick weekly tour slots around classes. Training, January 20–22, is paid and includes shadowing four tours. Event days can run longer; they still count toward the 20-hour cap.
Campus jobs are capped at 20 hours a week combined while classes are in session and 40 over breaks (see hour limits); for F-1 students the 20 is firm. Pay is biweekly by direct deposit; log every shift in the payroll system so your supervisor can approve it before the cutoff.
How to apply
Apply in PorterConnect, the student employment portal in MyPorter, under job number SJ-26-1133. Upload a résumé and a 150-word answer: “What is one thing about Porter you would warn a friend about?” Group interviews run November 30–December 4 and include a three-minute practice tour segment.
Apply by November 13, 2026. Questions about the job go to Kenji Moreau, Campus Visit Coordinator, Office of Admissions, at moreauk@uwporterfalls.edu or (715) 555–0144. Once hired, you complete an I-9 in person and a W-4 before your first shift; plan on a pay period or two before the first check arrives.
Fictional information
UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. This student job posting is invented: there is no tour route, ambassador cohort, no paycheck, and no hiring supervisor (Kenji Moreau does not exist), and applications sent anywhere go nowhere.
