Institutional accreditation
UW–Porter Falls is institutionally accredited by a regional accreditor (in the parody, the Higher Learning Commission), reaffirmed on a multi-year cycle. Institutional accreditation is what makes a school eligible for federal financial aid, makes its credits generally transferable to other accredited institutions, and makes its degrees recognized by employers and graduate schools. It is the baseline you should check for any college.
Program accreditation
Individual programs carry their own specialized accreditation from the relevant professional body — engineering, nursing, dietetics, counseling, education, business, and others each have one. Program accreditation signals the curriculum meets the field's standards and is often required to sit for a licensure or certification exam.
Why you should care
If your field requires a license (nursing, teaching, professional engineering, counseling, dietetics), attending a program without the right accreditation can mean you cannot get licensed, or cannot get licensed in another state. Always confirm a program's accreditation status before enrolling, and confirm it covers the specific track and campus you will attend.
Transfer and graduate school
Credits and degrees from an institutionally accredited school transfer and are recognized far more reliably than those from an unaccredited one. Some graduate and professional programs also want to see program accreditation for your undergraduate degree. If you might transfer or go on, this matters.
Where to check
Do not take a marketing page's word for it. Accreditors publish searchable directories of the institutions and programs they accredit, with the current status and any sanctions. If accreditation status changes
Accreditation can be placed on notice or withdrawn if a program falls short — rare, but it happens. A school is required to disclose this, and there are protections (a teach-out plan) for enrolled students. If you ever see a program's status flagged, ask the department directly what it means for your timeline and your license eligibility.
