What to bring (and not bring)

A practical packing guide for move-in — what rooms already have, what helps, and what's prohibited.

Home / What to bring (and not bring)

Pack light the first trip

You can buy the rest locally once you see the space. The high-value items: mattress topper, XL twin sheets, surge-protected power strip (plain extension cords are a fire-code violation), a small fan (not all halls are air-conditioned), and shower shoes for shared bathrooms.

What gets confiscated

Open-flame anything, halogen and lava lamps, space heaters, and cooking appliances with an exposed heating element — toasters, hot plates, non-approved coffee makers. Microwaves and mini-fridges are allowed within a size limit, or rent a combined unit through the hall. Check the full list before you shop; a health-and-safety inspection each term looks for the banned items.

In and around Porter Falls

Day-to-day life at Porter runs between Founders Union, the residence halls on the south quad and North Campus across the Riverfront Trail. The Porter Loop shuttle and a compact footprint mean most students can get anywhere on campus in under fifteen minutes on foot.

The practical details

Provided: Bed and mattress (extra-long twin), desk and chair, dresser, closet or wardrobe, window covering, wired and wireless internet. Bring: XL twin bedding, a power strip with a breaker, a fan, storage bins, a shower caddy, a first-aid kit. Prohibited: Candles, halogen lamps, space heaters, most cooking appliances, extension cords, pets except fish. Anything time-sensitive — an accommodation, a booking, a deadline — is worth confirming directly before you rely on it, because the specifics here can change from term to term.

If you have a question

The office behind this is Dean of Students Office (Founders Union, Room 200). Call (715) 555–0182 or email deanofstudents@uwporterfalls.edu during the fall and spring terms, or sign in to MyPorter to send a message or book a time. If it turns out another office owns the question, they will route it rather than send you back to the start.

Fictional information

UW–Porter Falls is a work of parody. Every office, person, building, phone number and statistic on this page is invented; nothing here describes a real institution or a service you can actually contact.
